Suggestion by Dunedin Importers. (Special to the “Star.”) DUNEDIN, December 15. The Union Company has informed the Otago Importers’ and Shippers’ Association that, owing to the present depression in trade it cannot accede to the association’s suggestion to reinstate even an occasional passenger steamer during the summer months between Melbourne and South Island ports. The association decided to suggest a revival during the summer months of the old East Coast (Dunedin to Auckland) passenger service. The chairman said that during a trip through the North Island business men had admitted to him the disadvantages under which the southern portion of the Dominion laboured, and promised support in any steps taken to remedy the position.
