Court Sequel to Death of Pedestrian. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, November 1. The trial was begun in the Supreme Court to-day of Paul Olsen Sabo, aged forty-one years, a taxi-driver, a Norwegian. He was indicted that, while in a state of intoxication, he was in charge of a motor-car and, by an act or omission in relation thereto, did cause the death of William Edwards. The prisoner pleaded not guilty. Evidence for the Crown showed that accused drove in an erratic manner from Hunter Street along Customhouse Quay and Whitmore Street at a speed of 25 miles an hour. Entering Whitmore Street he ran down deceased, who was crossing the road. Edwards died in hospital the same night without recovering consciousness. Police officers and medical witnesses said accused was suffering from the effects of liquor. A constable who had examined and tested the car said the footbrake would not act and the handbrake acted mostly on one wheel. After accused’s car hit Edwards it slowed down and then went off again and was followed by a man in another car.
