BETS ON WHIPPETS.
Allegation by Police in Court Case. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, November 2. Bookmaking at a Sunday whippet racing meeting was alleged against Lawrence Chapman, aged 28. who appeared for trial before the Chief Justice to-day. The meeting was attended by Constable Chaytor, under instructions. The constable said he saw the accused take money. Witness tried to arrange a bet, but the accused said he could not take a bet with witness. It was not worth the risk and might cost him £2O. To his Honor, witness said that he was not in uniform. Witness recovered three slips that had been torn from a notebook by the accused and thrown away during the afternoon. These he handed to Detective Campin. Detective Campin said that these slips showed 34 transactions. The entries ranged from 2s to £l. (Proceeding.)
