BAKERS’ DISPUTE.

Employers Apply for New Award. The dispute between the Canterbury master bakers and the employees regarding a new award was further considered at a sitting of the Conciliation Council to-day. An application for a new award was filed by the employers, who asked for reduced wages and a 48-hour working week, instead of 46 hours under the existing award. The Conciliation Commissioner (Mr S. Ritchie) presided and the assessors were:—Employers, Messrs L. A. Woodwood, C. E. Boon, R. Bush, P. Dunn; employees, Messrs F. J. Niall, T. O. Newnham, W. Broomfield, J. C. Kingsland.

Wages and hours of work were the main points in dispute. Proceedings were adjourned previously until after the hearing of the Dominion dispute. No settlement was reached in this dispute.

To-day the employers tentatively agreed to a 46-hour week on condition that the employees agreed to the other clauses.
