Two Men Fined for Theft of Goods. Sydney Chandler, aged 51. a carpenter, of Horatio Street, was charged before Mr E. D. Mosley, S.M., this morning with the theft of goods valued at 17s, the property of Woolworths, Ltd. A similar charge in respect of goods valued at £1 19s Sid, also the propertv of Woolworths, Ltd., was preferred against George William Swift, aged 52, a labourer, of Fitzgerald Avenue. Both pleaded guilty and were fined £3, in default fourteen days’ imprisonment. Drunk in a Cart. For being drunk in charge of a horse and cart in Durham Street yesterday afternoon, Harry Ernest Herbert, aged 51, a carrier, of Trafalgar Street, was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment. Senior-Sergeant Fox said that the accused had been convicted for a similar offence fairly recently and was fined. “ You’ve had twenty-eight convictions,” said the Magistrate. “I am going to try some other method now. ou won’t live at home for a month.” Serious Charges. Frank Ileasley Carpenter, aged 29, a hairdresser, of' Oxford, was charged with two serious offences. He. was remanded to appear at Rangiora on October 12. Bail of £IOO was allowed with one surety of £IOO. False Pretence Alleged. John Rossmore Callaghan, aged 29, a barman, of Christchurch, was charged with obtaining from Robert Thomas Day at Templeton the sum of £5 by falsely representing that a cheque drawn oil the Bank of New Zealand was a good and valid order. He was remanded until October 13 bail of £SO being allowed with one surety of £SO.
