OVERNIGHT ITEMS.

Continuing its membership drive, the executive of the Returned Soldiers’ Association convened a meeting at Papanui last night. There was a large attendance. Addresses on the work and advantages of the association were given by the Rev F. T. Read and Messrs R. Grant, C. Chisnall and G. Dabourne. The meeting was successful in gaining many* new members. The following local committee was set up:— Messrs J. Scofield, W. Clarke, E. Boocock, W. T. Maher, J. Brooks, A. R. Richards, A. E. Daws, T. Anderson and S. Ives (secretary).

Driving was a nerve-racking performance for tramway motormen and motorists in Christchurch last night, when the city was enshrouded in the densest fog that this winter has brought so far. The fog was thickest in the northern end of the city and the apprehensive tramway motormen kept their bells clanging. Motorists turning from side streets in the main

roads were especially cautious, and cyclists hugged the sides of the roads. In one case early in the evening a motorist got well out of position and after shouting at a tramway motorman, drove past on the wrong side. Tramway motormen had some trouble in maintaining the timetables.

A scheme to absorb unemployed on widening the narrow and dangerous road leading into Lees Valley has been suggested, with the establishment of a camp for the men in the valley. A visit of inspection was made y*esterda>’ by Mr E. H. Andrews, chairman of the Christchurch Citizens’ Unemployment Relief Committee, and Councillor Annie Fraer. They were favourably impressed with the possibility of the performance of fiseful work and the scheme will be brought under the notice of the Unemployment Board, backed up by the Oxford County Council.

Enthusiasm marked a meeting of the Women’s Auxiliary’ of the Port Christchurch League held in the Navy League Hall yesterday afternoon. The twenty’ women present heard a short address on the Estuary’ harbour scheme by Mr S. W. Richardson, a member of the league. The absorption of unemployed boys in Canterbury will be discussed by a ! meeting of the Opportunities Committee of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce to be held in the Chamber of Commerce Hall, at the corner of Worcester Street and Oxford Terrace, on Monday, at 4 p.m. Farmers, builders, businessmen and representatives of trade groups, with the addition of anyone interested or likely to prove useful in finding work for boys, will be welcomed.
