ILLEGAL LOTTERY.

Sweepstake on Football Match. FINE OF £1 ON BARMA’n. (Special to the '“Star.”) AUCKLAND, August 2. “ We wish to show the public that such lotteries are illegal, and that the licensees of hotels must prevent them,” said Detective-Sergeant Kelly in the Police Court, when Arthur Wellesley Austin, barman, was charged with establishing a lottery. Sergeant Kelly said two constables visited the hotel, and saw defendant walking among the customers and writing names in a book. He was running a sweep on the result of the Marist-Pon-sonby League match at Carlaw Park, and each contributor paid Is. A sergeant later visited the hotel, and recovered the book, which had a record of 36 names. The sum of 36s was found in a mug. The licensee was not aware the sweep was in progress. Counsel said the offence was parallel to that known as “ selling a horse.” Racehorses were not even suggested in this case, however, and it was not a very heinous offence. 1 “ Let this be a warning.” said the Magistrate, in fining the accused £l.
