Manager to Retire, After 43 Years’ Service. MR J. MACGIBBON’S CAREER. Mr John Mac Gibbon, who has been manager of the Christchurch branch of the Bank of New Zealand since 1926, will retire on superannuation at J;he end of this month after forty-three years’ service as an officer of the bank He will be succeeded by Mr P. L. Porter, at present assistant manager of the branch, and Mr 11. E. Garth, the accountant of the branch, is to be promoted to the position of assistant manager. Mr Mac Gibbon joined the bank at Temuka in 1889, and after spending a year in South Canterbury, was transferred to the Christchurch branch in IS9O. Six years later he was transferred to Invercargill, and in 1915 he returned to the Christchurch branch as accountant. During 1918 he was engaged in inspecting work in the South Island, and in 1919 was appointed manager of the Ashburton branch. Less than a year later he was appointed sub-inspector and subsequently was promoted to the position of resident sub-inspector at the head office. In 1923 Mr Mac Gibbon came to Christchurch again and relieved the manager, Mr G. A. U. Tapper, for eight months during his absence on a trip to England. On returning to the head office he was appointed inspector in charge of staff and premises for the whole of the bank’s • service, and on January 3, 1926, he took over his duties as manager of the Christchurch branch. It is Mr Mac Gibbon’s intention to reside permanently in Christchurch after his retirement. lie was born in Southland in 1870 and is the eldest son of the late Mr Thomas Mac Gibbon, a pioneer of Otago and Southland. Two of his brothers. Dr T. A. Mac Gibbon and Mr R. G. Mac Gibbon, District Electrical Engineer of the Public Works Department, are also in Christchurch. Mr Porter, who is to take up the duties of manager on September 1, is a son of Mr E. C. W. Porter, a former branch manager of the Bank of New

Zealand. He was born in Wairoa, Hawke’s Bay, and joined the service of the bank at Queenstown in 1904. Subsequently he was stationed at Invercargill for some time and from 1910 to 1919 was on the head office staff. He was assistant accountant in Wellington from 1919 to 1921, when he came to Christchurch in a similar capacity. A year afterwards he went to Ashburton as manager, and two years later was appointed manager at Invercargill. In 1926 Mr Porter was transferred to Suva as manager of the two branches of the bank in Fiji, and in 1928 he went to London, where he spent two years as assistant to the manager. He next held the position of inspector in Australia and New Zealand until he came to Christchurch in July of last year as assistant manager.
