Vice-Regal. His Excellency the Governor-Gene-ral, Lord Bledisloe, accompanied by Lady Bledisloe and party, will arrive in Christchurch on Supday morning, returning north on Saturday evening, August 13. They will stay at the United Service Hotel. Ministerial. The Hon R. Masters, Minister of Industries and Commerce, and Minister of Education, will arrive in Christchurch on Saturday to open the Canterbury Winter Show. Sir Thomas Sidey was an arrival from the north this morning. Dr Gordon Gunn returned from the north this morning. Messrs D. G. Sullivan, M.P., and H. S. S. Kyle, M.P., returned from Wellington this morning Messrs J. P. Macneil (Melbourne), C. Irons and J. Stewart (Wellington) are registered at Warner’s Hotel. . Messrs E. J. Guinness and W. W. Allan (Wellington) and A. Gorman (Waimate) are registered at the Clarendon Hotel.
Air E. T. Spidey, Superintendent of Railway Workshops, arrived from Wellington this morning on his way through to the West Coast. Among the arrivals from Wellington this morning were Alessrs S. G. Pearce, W. Allen, J. N. Mills and R. T. Whitaker.
Air F. J. T. Grigg, Government Analyst for Canterbury and Westland, left Christchurch last night to attend a conference of dairy research chemists at Palmerston North.
Air W. 11. Dixon, conductor of the Royal Christchurch Alusical Society, was admitted to Lewisham Hospital yesterday, suffering from a slight illness.
Air R. M. Barrer. AI.Sc., of Canterbury College, will leave by the . ferry steamer to-night for the North Island, on his way to England, where he will continue his studies in scientific research at Clare College, Cambridge. Mr James Young, Curator of the Christchurch Botanic Gardens, who suffered a stroke on Saturday, was stated last evening to be still seriously ill. Air Young’s right side is affected. Alessrs J. Alorris (Melbourne), L. R. Hill, L. H. Tingey, C. Sander, P. J. Nathan (Wellington), A. H. Cramp. W. H. Taine and J. Glover Clark (Auckland) are staying at the United Service Hotel. Air T. W. Dent, who retired about twelve months ago from the staff of Alessrs Booth, Macdonald and Co., will leave, with his wife and son, for Sydney on Thursday. His intention is to settle permanently at Lismore.
Alessrs 11. E. Carde (Auckland), Clias. Moore, Horace Smith, J. 11. Whittaker, P. IT. Manoy (Wellington), J. Cummings, A- E Weaver (Greymouth), M. Forrest, W. Jones (Dunedin) and ,R. Stark (Oamaru) are staying at the New City Hotel. Air Gilbert E. Reeves has retired from the managership of the Ocean Accident and Guarantee Corporation, Ltd., in Christchurch, after twenty-one years with the company. Previously he was with the Alliance Assurance Company for thirty years. Air Reeves will be succeeded b} r Air V. F. Webley. Air Reeves was the recipient of a smoker’s outfit from his staff. Mr Evan Rees, the chief clerk and inspector, in making the presentation, spoke of the able way in which Mr Reeves had always carried out his duties as manager, and expressed the hope on behalf of the Christchurch branch that his retirement would prove a long and happy holiday for him. Air Reeves briefly responded and referred to his service with the “ Ocean ” as being the brightest of his career. He was sorry to give up, but was sure that they would find Air Webley an able and agreeable successor. Yesterday, on behalf of the Canterbury Fire Underwriters’ Association, Mr G. C. Hill, a vice-president of the association, presented Air Reeves with a roll-top desk and a chair. Air Webley was also welcomed.
