A decision has been made to complete the Lewis Pass highway to link up Canterbury and the West Coast. Two hundred single men are to start work immediately, and Mr F. Langbein, District Public Works Engineer, will visit the pass during the week-end to select camp sites. These photographs show (top) : Men at work on the road shortly before the operations were stopped, and (below) the road running through rugged country.
