PORPOISE ON BEACH.

Stranded Mammal Killed at Sumner. A rumour at midday to-day that a seal had been captured on the Clifton beach, Sumner, caused a crow’d to gather on the sand near the tramway bridge. The find, however, proved to be a five-foot porpoise which had come in with the tide. The stranded fish was assisted several times into the water, but appeared to be too weak to swim. It ultimately died and was skinned. The internal organs appeared to be much diseased. Red growths of the size of walnuts grew scattered over the stomach, while in the lungs were hundreds of white cysts. The mammal, lying slit from head to tail, resembled the carcase of a freshl}'killed pig. A layer of fat fully an inch thick was covered with a tough hide, which it is proposed to prepare for thp tannery. Several punctures on the outside went to show that the porpoise had been either attacked by fish or injured by the rocks.
