Trout Hatcheries Stocked With Ova. ACCLIMATISATION WORK. (Special to the " Star.”) ASHBURTON, June 30. The Ashburton hatcheries are well stocked at present the boxes containing 163,000 brown trout ova taken from trout in the Ashburton river and 157,000 from Lake Heron fish, making a total of 320,000. This number will be shortly increased by further stripping operations at Lake Heron. The South Canterbury Society has been granted permission to strip a number of rainbow trout ova from Lake Heron this season and the society has been asked that a number of fry be made available for liberation in Lake Camp. Professor Percival, of the New Zealand Fresh Water Research Committee recently visited Lake Heron and secured some useful data. Fie also tagged a number of fish in the Ashburton River. Relief Worker Injured. While engaged in removing tree stumps in the Fairfield plantation yesterday, a relief worker, W. J. Scammell, received a painful injury. He was adjusting the snig-chain round a stump when the horse moved unexpectedly and jammed one of his fingers. The injury was attended to at the Ashburton Hospital. Efficiency Shield. The Territorial Efficiency Shield presented by the Salvation Army Commissioner in New Zealand for the best progress during 1931 has been won by the Ashburton Salvation Army SundaA' School. The trophy carries with it £lO worth of books for the Young People’s Library. The shield, which is on view in a local shop window will be presented to the winners on Sunday by Major Suter of Christchurch. The classes are in charge of Brother W. Hopwood, who is a keen worker in the interests of the Sunday School. Collection For Relief Fund. As a result of the collection taken up during the annual football match, banks and law v. mercantile representatives yesterday, the Citizens’ Relief Fund will benefit to the extent of £2 10s sd. Proposed Boxing Contest. The Ashburton Boxing Association is endeavouring to arrange a professional contest between W. Sullivan (Hastings), who recently defeated J. Ccssill (Palmerston North) at Ashburton witli Ray Nicol (Southland). Nicol was unable to fulfil an engagement to meet Sullivan this month on account of an injured arm and it is hoped that the contest will be arranged to take place next month. Unemployment Relief. A meeting of the Ashburton Local Unemployment Committee was held this afternoon, Mr R. Kerr (DeputyMayor) presiding. It was decided for next week to give the two-day men one day, three-day men two days and the four-day men three days. The forty-six three-day men who stood down for an extra day last week will be given another day next week out of the remainder of the allocation, the balance to be distributed amongst the most necessitous cases among the four-day men. Six applications for men for farm work under the No. 4a Scheme were approved. Mr G. Kelly stated that the County Council had found it neces-

sary to decline further applications under the No. 5 Scheme for farm work until the present applications had been fully taken up. He explained that it had been ascertained that farmers were finding difficulty in getting men.
