Maori Concert. An enjoyable Maori concert was given at the Papanui Memorial Ha'll on Thursday by the Rev A. J. Scamer, superintendent of the Methodist Home Mission Department. The Rev A. Hopper welcomed the visitors and the Rev Seamer acted as interpreter for the Maori speakers. The poi dances, h27cas, songs and instrumental items were much appreciated by those present. St Silas’s Mothers’ Union. St Silas’s Mothers’ Union, Papanui, held its monthly meeting on Wednesday, Mrs Orbell presiding. Mrs H. S. E. Turner gave an interesting address on the work done at St Anne’s Home for the welfare of those under its care. Mesdames Munro and Chaney were appointed a committee for the next meeting. M SC Social Evening. An enjoyable social evening, tendered to their St Silas’s friends, was held at the home of Mr and Mrs Chaney, Styx, recently. Games, competitions and music made a pleasant evening pass. Competitions were won by Mrs Mottram and Messrs Lavender and H. Chaney. Among those present were:—Mr and Mrs Chaney, Mr and Mrs Mottram, Mr and Mrs Leadbetter, Mr and Mrs Lavender, Mr and Mrs Barnes, Mr and Mrs Jones, Mesdames Allington, Donaldson, Munro, Orbell, Wilson and Vigors, Misses Orbell, Price, Mayne, Chaney and Allington (2), Messrs L. Leadbetter, R. Price, M. Price, R. Rossiter, R. Walker, J. Barnes, T. Mayne, C. Chaney, H. Chaney and B. Lavender* Horticultural Society. Mr J. N. M’Leod presided at a meeting of the Papanui Horticultural Society. The following were appointed a social committee: Mr and Mrs W. W. % Taylor, Mesdames H. Hookham and R. Cookson. The matter of improving the rules and the show schedule was discussed, and a committee consisting of Mesdames Taylor, Cookson and Hookham, - and Messrs J. Foster, H. B. Baldwin and J. E. Yates, was appointed to go into the matter. It was stated that at the last year’s garden competition the results were published by the Christchurch Horticultural Society without being checked by the local society, whose members understood the conditions. It was decided to write to the Christchurch Society to that effect. It was reported that £4 10s had been raised by recent social efforts. sc sc Papanui Band of Hop*. The Papanui Band of Hope’* monthly meeting was held in St Paul’s Schoolroom. The Rev E. Bandy presided and gave an interesting address on “ Temperance.” A pianoforte solo and a recitation were given by Miss Shona Wat6on, and songs were sung by Doreen Palmer, E. Kingsley, D. Dodgson, B. Davies, Z. Tomkies and R. Egglestone. A pretty playette, entitled “ The Good Samaritan,” was given by about twenty children and was delightfully acted. sc North Beach Boy Scouts. The North Beach Boy Scout Troop entertained their parents on ‘Wednesdayevening; in the Memorial Hall, North. Beach. The .evening consisted of a number of demonstrations of Scout work, which were greatly, enjoyed by All present. At the request of Commissioner W. E. Furby, the Scoutmaster, Commissioner Crampton, made the following pre-sentations:—-Patrol Leader T. Lowry, certificate for winning the Peter Memorial Shield for good camping:: Patrol Leader Pat Seymour, medal for meritorious attention to duty; Patrol Lender Noel Steven, medal for most practical Scout; Airedale Patrol, certificate for patrol paining; most points for efficiency. Apologies for absence were received from Sir Cyril Ward (patron) and LadyWard, Colonel Creswell (Deputy-Do-minion Chief Commissioner) and the Misses Creswell, Dr P. Clennell Fenwick (Dominion Chief Commissioner) and Mrs Fenwick. sc Farewell Social. On Tuesday evening last the Burwood School Committee held a farewell social to Mr and Mrs Walker and Mr and Mrs M’Pherson, who are leaving the district. Musical and other items were given by Misses Cant and Simpson, teachers at the school, and by Mrs M’Pherson and Mr S. Smith. Mr Rowse, chairman of the School Committee paid a tribute to Mr Walker for his services as head master and also to Mr M’Pherson for the help he had given as secretary to the committee and in many other activities during his residence in the district. Supper was served by members' wives. Misse* Cant and Busen and Mrs M’Pherson presided at the piano.
