Garrya Elliptica.

A. Garden Corner

'J'HIS fine hardy shrub is just now bursting into bloom. In the early spring it is one of the best; its long catkin inflorescence of a creamy green colour being both quaint and decorative. The flowers are pendant from the ends of the branches, and are most attractive. The Garryas come from North America, this particular variety, coming from California, and the genus is named after a Mr Garry, of the Hudson Bay Fur Company, who had botanical leanings. With G. elliptica the male and female flowers appear separately, and a reversion of the usual order occurs in that the former are the more handsome of / the two. This shrub has strong claims to inclusion in the shrubberv. T. D. LENNIE.
