PLUNKET SOCIETY.
Well-attended Annual Meeting. WORK EULOGISED BY MAYOR. The Radiant Hall was well filled last evening when the annual meeting of the Christchurch branch of the Royal New Zealand Society for the Health of Women and Children (the Plunket Society) was held. The Mayor of Christchurch (Mr D. G. Sullivan, M.P.) was in the chair. The Mayor, in proposing- the adoption of the annual report and balance-sheet, said that he regarded it as an honour to be asked to take the chair, for the society had fought and won its battle to gain the confidence of the people. The society had the support of the Government, and he was sure this support was universal. The society had proved its great service and work over twenty-five years. It was true that a great many young people now in New Zealand owed their lives and well being lo the society. Mr \V. M. La.seel be s seconded the motion. “ You will notice that last year’s balance-sheet showed a credit balance of £450. and this year’s figures. show a debit of £401.” he said. ‘‘This is only a reflection of the arduous times through which everybody is passing. Then this year the society has paid out for the first time £IOG to the nurses’ superannuation fund—a desirable institution. It is pleasing to note that the Karitane fund is in a healthy state, even though the Government grant has been reduced.” The report and balance-sheet (already published) were adopted. The president paid tributes to the services of Mrs M. IT. Godby, the secretary (Mrs Cecil Wood) and other officers. Election of Officers.
