There is great sorrow in Kendal, that “ striding-off town” in Westmorland beloved of all travellers in the North. Stramongate School must be closed for financial reasons. It is one more of the long, long trail of curses from the war. The school has a great reputation, and its scholars carry its traditions far and wide. Among them are some famous names: John Dalton, discoverer of the atomic theory, is one, and Sir Arthur Eddington, great physicist and astronomer is another.
