(By “WHEEL.”) Riders on long- marks again figured prominently in the Papanui Amateur Cycling Club’s road race, -which was held last Saturday afternoon over a twenty-seven miles course. J. L. Richards, who had M. F. Pearl as a co-marker for four out of the. five laps, finished 3 min 41. sec behind the winner to whom he was conceding a start of four and a quarter minutes. The riding of J. H. Wain and S. Conway was a feature of the race. • These two riders, who were in receipt Richards and Pearl, rode a remarkably fine race over the first three laps, gaining ten seconds on the scratch men. Wain had a spill at the completion of the third lap, -Conway waiting for him. The result was that from then on they lost all the ground they had gained, finishing lmin 24see slower than Richards. The first nine places were filled by riders who were in receipt of 34min i and more start. O. Buckley, the winner, is showing steady improvement each week. In the previous week’s race Buckley finished third, just failing in the sprint for the line. Considering that lie has had little racing experience, Buckley is shaping remarkably well. It. W. Marks, second place, continues • to ride consistently and has been prominent in practically every race con- , ducted by the Papanui Club this season. For a limit rider, Marks sprinted well to finish so close up, especially ; against experienced riders. V. Ayres, third place, also improved ! his postiion and was only beaten in the : dash for the line. | 11. W. Skidmore rode a particularly good race. He is one of the fittest riders at present competing. J. L. Richards again secured fastest time honours and rode a steady race. For the greater part of the journey Richards was accompanied by Pearl, whom he left over the latter portion of the race. Riding by himself over the last six miles, Richards cut 17sec off bis time for the first lap, which was > the same distance. The table below gives a comparison of the riding times for the five laps, a total of twenty-seven miles, as ridden _£• Buckley (4Smin). first place, .7. L. Richards (scratch), fastest time, and J. H. G. Lange, who a few weeks ago announced his intention of endeavouring to lower the record from the Marshland School to Craddock’s Corner and return, has decided to postpone his attempt for a month. It is possible that a sports club will bo formed at Rangiora in the near future. A meeting of those interested in the project is to be held at Rangiora on Saturday next. Road races and an annual sports meeting have been mentioned as part of the proposed club’s activities. K ♦*# M Cash cyclists are now beginning to give serious thought to the Waimatc to Christchurch road race. With the big event only three months away, intending competitors are already preparing by indulging in long rides. Each weeken.d sees an increasing number of riders on the country roads. Preparations are well in hand for raising the prize money for the race, and the prospects are that the prizes will be on a par with those for last year’s race. Mr R. S. Shellack, president of the Rakaia . Athletic and Cycling Club, states that the club will be holding an open race shortly. The question of holding the annual sports meeting next December is already in hand. The Rakaia Club, which is affiliated to the South Canterbury Centre of the New Zealand Athletic, Cycling and Axemen’s Union, is anxious to affiliate with the North Canterbury Centre of the union. Officials of the club contend that practically all the competitors come from North Canterbury and that Rakaia riders compete in Christchurch. It is possible that at the next annual meeting of the New Zealand Athletic, Cycling and A&emen’s Union a remit to change the boundaries of the North and South Canterbury Centres will be discussed.
