The gross railway returns for the Canterbury and West Coast districts for the four weeks ending June 25 were £61,315, as compared with £77,404 for the corresponding period last year. /The main drop occurred in the goods traffic, the figures showing a decrease of 20 per cent. The passenger traffic figures dropj>ed by 16 per cent.
The annual grant by Parliament to the Privy Purse of the King and Queen is £IIO,OOO per annum. The total cost of all the Royal Family, including the descendants of Queen Victoria, is 4d per head of the people of Great Britain every year. The Prince of Wales, who draws his income mainly from the Duchy of Cornwall, draws nothing from the taxpayer.
