Fortalice Wins Again.

* (Special to the “ Star.”) REEFTON, June 4. In the strenuous days in which we live a stroke of luck for an individual possesses interest. R. Morris, of Reefton, who once upon a time was a jockey, acquired Fortalice in unusual circumstances. At the Greymouth meeting in January this gelding, who, by the way, was wrongly described in the Greymouth book yesterday, was submitted for sale at public auction. Mr J. R. Simpson, of Karamea, purchased him and handed him over to Morris on the understanding that Morris paid £2O for the first two wins. Fortalice won at Omoto yesterday and again at Reefton to-day. In the Opening Hack Handicap he was second choice, carrying £4B 10s. The favourite was Homecoming (£51).. Homecoming got to the front early and set the pace. Fortalice moved up about two furlongs from home and joined Homecoming. The pair came round the home turn on terms. Homecoming looked to be beaten entering the straight, and Fortalice won by half a length from Solvear, with Knocklong less than a length away. Homecoming was only fourth, but J. W. Jennings lodged a protest against the winner. He considered that Homecoming was coming again just inside the straight when Fortalice, swerving from the whip, came across and interfered with him. The Judicial Committee took a considerable time over the protest, but left the judge’s placings unaltered. Dark Denver (£77), favourite for the first trot, won convincingly from Lorelei and Allanora. Dawn Sonoma made up his handicap quickly, but then broke and lost all the advantage gained. He came again and finished fourth. A field of seven contested the Winter Handicap. Ranelagh was favourite with £139 10s. New Boy led in the early stages from Ranelagh. Coomassie moved up along the back and was the leader into the straight with Ranelagh. Ravine came on the outside and won easily from Ranelagh. The winner was third choice, carrying £7B 10s.
