SCHOONER FOR 30/-.

£12,000 Vessel Sold at Cape Town. (Special to the “ Star.”) CAPE TOWN. April 27. j The three-masted wooden schooner Protea, which was built in Nova Scotia in 1918 at a cost of over £12,000, was sold at the Cape Town docks for the sum of 30s. The vessel is copper sheathed and has a cargo of salt under hatches. The salt was not included in the purchase. The schooner has been tied up for the past eight years in the docks and the sale was conducted without reserve under a Civil Court writ. Bidding started at 10s and mounted by half crowns to 30s, at which figure it was purchased by the Railway Administration. To all appearances the ship is sound, but it is probable that she will be broken up. for the value of the wood and fittings in her is considerable. One of the reasons why she went so cheaply is that dock dues would have to be paid and, in the case of breaking up, a 20 per cent Customs duty would have to be paid on the material removed from the harbour area.
