CHEAPER FARES WANTED
Railway Travel to Trotting Meetings.
Cheaper railway fares for those attending trotting meetings are wanted by the Board of the New Zealand Trotting Association. The fact that cheap excursions are run for football matches and not for trotting meetings caused some comment at the meeting of the board last evening. Representations are to be made to the Government on the subject. Mr H. W. Kitchingham raised the topic, stating that he noticed that cheap fares were to be charged from Greymouth to Christchurch and vice versa on the occasion of the inter-island football match. It cost only *los to travel from Greymouth to see a football match, but 35s to attend a race meeting. “ The unwise and foolish part is that if the Gevernment would help to attract better attendances to the race meetings it would mean more revenue,” stated Mr Kitchingham. “ Why are both charges not the same, especially when the Government is going to get the extra tax?” It was decided to write to the Mniister of Internal Affairs, the Minister of Railways and the Railway Board drawing attention to the need for reducing fares.
