Lovelock to be Sent to Olympic Games. Per Press Association. DUNEDIN, June 4. The £SO required to supplement the Athletic Council's contribution of £7O to ensure J. E. Lovelock’s inclusion in the Olympic team has been guaranteed. This means that Lovelock will represent .New Zealand. Interviewed shortly after Lovelock had broken the -British Umpire mile record at Oxford, Mr W. Dryden, his trainer throughout his career in Otago, said that it would not surprise him if Lovelock broke the world’s record before long. Mr Dryden said that he always knew that Lovelock had remarkable pace over the mile —he could set a clinking pace for three laps, but in New Zealand had been just ’a little lacking when it came to pace over the final bit. llis association with J. P. Cornes, the brilliant Dn'glish miler, has improved his finishing ability, Mr Dryden considers, and for that reason he believes he will still do better yet. Lovelock is little more than twenty-one years of age, and was at one time the athletic champion of the Timaru Boys’ High School. He was also a useful footballer, but gave up that game after breaking his leg a couple of years ago or more. He won his first Otago mile championship in 1930, and the same year finished ahead of J. W. Savidan in the New Zealand mile ehampionf»JUip at Wanganui, in which his time was 4min 25 4-5 sec, the best he did in New Zealand. He won the Otago mile again in 1931, and at the New Zealand championships was third in the mile. Lovelock Is a runner with confidence in his own ability, without being inclined to overconfidence, and those who have followed his career at all closely state that it is all the same to him whether he is running in an important lace or not—he is not affected by the occasion. He won the New Zealand University mile championship last season at Dunedin, and since going Home has been improving all the time. His best effort previous to his record was in dead-heating with ,Cornes in the mile at the Oxford-Cam-bridge sports.
