WAIMAKARIRI RIVER.

Opening of New Mouth to be Made Shortly. The Waimakariri River Trust’s engineer reported to the trust at its meeting yesterday that the work in connection with the stabilisation of the mouth of the river was proceeding. The construction of the second tier of blocks at the seaward end was now almost completed, though the work had been delayed by rough weather. The whole work would be completed and the mouth opened in new position in about four weeks’ time. A gang of 150 relief workers was carrying on with the construction of the southern embankment, and was making fair progress, the report continued. A further gang of 150 relief workers was engaged on the continuation of the groynes and embankment at the head of Coutts Island, and a gang of 130 had been started on clearing work in the south branch at Belfast.
