Pride of Madeira.
A Garden Corner.
'J'HIS handsome biennial— Eckium candicans—is one of the outstanding features of gardens at Sumner, Cashmere and around the bays, where frosts 4re light, for coming from the warm Canary Islands, it will not stand cold to any extent. Otherwise it would also be a distinctive occupant of flower borders on the plains, for its long panicles of light blue flowers set on stalks 3ft long, readily conform to vase work and last several days. The Eckium’s old-time name was the Viper’s Bugloss, meaning ox-tongue, and they belong to the same family order as the herb Borage and the Anchusas. There are many varieties, mostly blue. The Canary Islands and Cape of Good Hope provide the greater portion of them. T. D. LENNIE.
