Crew to be Sent to Picton Regatta.

It was decided at a meeting of the Canterbury Rowing Association last evening to send an eight-oar crew to Picton to compete in the interprovincial eight-oar championship to be rowed on Easter Saturday. The question of finance was the main point in a lengthy discussion, and the tension was relieved by a delegate stating that he had a quotation from a city service company, which would take fourteen men to Picton for £24 10s, averaging 28s a man. The association guaranteed to send the boat free of expense to the clubs. The subject was brought up as a result of a letter from the Avon Club, which stated that it was prepared to guarantee only the accommodation expenses of its members, providing the association arranged for the transport to and from Picton at its expense. It also stated that the club thought that, as it was an interprovincial championship, the governing body should meet the cost of travelling, and not debit the separate clubs as suggested at a previous meeting. Kesteven): The association cannot pay the transport expenses. We cannot get a “ gate ” like other sports. The question of the cost of transporting the boat was considered, and Mr Stiles said that he had a quotation for £2, which would enable the association to assist with the crew’s fares. The chairman: We must send the men up in comfortable conditions, otherwise they will not be able to row on the day of the race. Mr Kesteven: Avon will not see us It was decided to accept the offer of a transport company to transport the crew for £24 10s. The transporting of the boat was left in the hands of the president, the secretary and Mr C. A. Stiles, with power to add.
