FIVE CANDIDATES.
German Presidential Poll Near. BERLIN, March 5. The official list of candidates for the presidential election in Germany contains five names. The polling will take place on March 13, and if none of the candidates receives a clear jpajority a second poll will be taken on April’ 10. The candidates are:— Field-Marshal Paul von ITindenburg, retiring President, is a non-party nominee and is standing on the strength of millions of signatures given by’ various parties and organisations as “ trustee for the nation.”
Ilerr Adolf Hitler represents the Nazis, the Fascists.
Colonel Theodor Duesterberg repre sents the Steel Helmets and Monarchists. He is deputy’-leader of ths Nationalists.
Herr Ernst Thalmann, a transport worker, is the Communist nominee. Herr Adolf Winter, at present imprisoned at Crossjena for swindling, represents the. fanatics, who believe in the revalorisation of a particular series of old mark banknotes stamped red.
Many’ Nationalists are expected to vote for President -ITindenburg. However, the strength, efficiency and organisation of the Nazis is astonishing, leading to doubts whether President ITindenburg will obtain an absolute majority on the first ballot.
