Violence Will be Met with Floggings, says Judge.

“ We see by the newspapers that this sort of crime goes on in Australia, but as far as I am concerned cases that come before me will be seriously dealt with,” said Mr Justice Reed, in sentencing Leslie Jack Davis, aged nineteen, who admitted assaulting a taxidriver with intent to rob. “ For such an offence you are liable to life imprisonment and three floggings,” continued his Honor. “If we have further cases of this kind floggings will certainly be ordered.
The Judge passed sentence of four years’ hard labour, but was informed that the charge was not one of robbery with violence.
His Honor said that the charge had been wrongly laid. He had prisoner brought back, told him he was fortunate and sentenced him to the maximum of three years’ hard labour.
