RELIEF OF DISTRESS.
Generous Donation of Goods from Country. In response to the appeal made for assistance from the country districts, the Central Relief Depot has received a generous gift of boots, clothing and groceries from Ashburton. As a result of the Linwood Gift Scheme, the depot’s supplies have also been supplemented by donations of sago, rice and In acknowledging the gilts with appreciation, the officer in charge of the depot, Mr J. W. Woodbury, stated this morning that last week s collection of clothing and supplies equalled that of the previous week, but was quite insufficient for requirements. Once more the sum of £4O had to be spent to supplement the rations issued to the needy bv the Hospital Board. The board, explained Mr Woodbury, supplied onlyrations the week unemployed men were not given relief work. Even if men received their full quota of work, they' were unable to keep their rent going and to provide adequately for their families. The depot was urgently in need of clothing, boots and supplies of all descriptions.
