BUS SERVICES STOPPED.
Applications for Special Race Licenses Refused. The three passenger bus companies that had intended to run special services to Motukarara for the races today were not permitted to do so, their applications for licenses being refused by the Central Licensing Authority in Wellington. Notification of the refusal was forwarded to the companies yesterday afternoon. Arrangements that had been made for the trip had to be cancelled. The refusal of the applications is regarded as the first step to prevent competition with the Railway Department by private bus companies. The effect of the Central Licensing Authority’s action in this case was to divert a large number of intending bus passengers to the railway. The bus companies’ loss was the Railway Department’s gain, over 300 passengers travelling by the special train that left Christchurch at 11.15 o’clock. This number was larger than any other that the Railway Department has carried to Motukarara on race davs for several years. In addition to the special passenger train, the department ran a special train carrying horses. Fifty horses were transported to the course by this means.
