TOURIST TROPHY.

Selection of New Zealand Representatives.

CRITICISM BY CLUBS.

The method of selection of the New Zealand representatives to race in the International Tourist Trophy race in the Isle of Man has not met with the unanimous approval of motorcycling bodies throughout New Zealand. The men. selected are A. Mattson and W. Tolley. The Auckland Sports Motor Cycle Club claims that both the Dominion representatives should have been selected from the riders in the New Zealand Tourist Trophy. This proposal is opposed by representatives of the motor section of the Pioneer Sports Club, Christchurch.

“ The matter has not been discussed here,” said one official. “ The view we take is that the New Zealand Auto Cycle Union is in the best position to choose the representatives. We are quite satisfied with what has been done and are content to leave things to them in the future.”

Mr R. Parker, president of the Motor Section of the Pioneer Sports Club, stated that if the two riders were selected from those competing in the New Zealand Tourist Trophy, it would not be as representative as it should be from the fact that many riders were unable to pay for the trip to Auckland. It would mean practically that the more southern riders would be debarred from selection. Nomination by Clubs. “ Last year,” he said, “ the Pioneer Club nominated Tolley, as we realised there was nothing to touch him in the South Island. If the riders could be selected by the clubs and sorted out by the Auto Cycle Union it would be a better way. We were satisfied with the Union last year, and this year we would like to see Tolley go again.

“ There was only one South Island rider competing at the New Zealand Tourist Trophy race so far as I know. That was F. Cross, of Timaru. If the Tourist Trophy race was held at Wellington or Nelson we would have no objections to the New Zealand repreAuckland means too much expense and sentatives being chosen there, but the younger riders cannot afford it.”
