BURNED TO GROUND.
The Hikurangi Maori College. Per Press Association. CARTERTON, March 4. Fire early this afternoon destroyed the Hikurangi Maori College at Clareville. The principal’s attention was drawn to smoke issuing from a cupboard near the kitchen chimney. A hand extinguisher was used immediately, but the fire had too strong a hold. The furniture was taken out but was afterwards destroyed by the flames, which were driven by a strong breeze. Two pianos and school desks were the only salvage. The building was an historic one. It was built by Sir Henry Tancred over fifty years ago, and contained sixteen rooms. The building and contents were covered by insurance.
