LOWER SUPERANNUATION
Teacher Protests Against New Proposal. (Special to the “Star.”) AUCKLAND, March 5. A strong protest against possible Government action in limiting the benefits of the State Superannuation Fund was made by Mr F. A. Garry, president of the New Zealand Federation of Teachers and a member of the Teachers’ Superannuation Board. From time to time, he said, contributors have been permitted to pay into the fund various sums which would increase their retiring allowances. “ Contributors have taken advantage of this and have deposited considerable sums which would never have been paid were it suspected that the benefits promised would be withdrawn. To now limit the benefits would be practically confiscation of the amounts.” Mr Garry said that there were injustices and anomalies under the pre-
sent scheme and probably a new basis for contributions and a revision of benefits should be considered for future contributors. However, common justice demanded that the promises to past contributors should be honoured. Some years ago, in New South Wales, the Superannuation Fund was closed to new contributors, but the claims cf the old ones were met. Surely nothing less could be expected in New Zeal 0 "'*
