Stately Sunflowers.

A Garden Corner.

\\7TTH the opening of the perenT nial sunflowers comes autumn, and they are not always welcome on that account. They belong to the Helianthus family (Helios the sun, and anthos, a flower) referring to the opinion that the flowers turn round with the sun. They are mostly of North American origin, and only boast of one colour; that is yellow, in various shades, but variety is got in height, size of bloom and as single and double blooms.

Growing 6ft high, they are useful for the border or shrubbery and are excellent for cutting for the house. If they have a fault it is that they grow too freely in good soil. 11. rigidus Miss Mellish (single) and Queen Victoria* (double), are good types to grow. 11. tuberosus is the well known Jerusalem artichoke.
