Queen Elizabeth is usually credited with wearing the first pair of silk stockings in England, but it is probable that the actual pioneer was William Rider, a London apprentice, who obtained a pair of thick worsted stockings from an Italian merchant, copied them in silk, and presented them to the Earl of Pembroke in 1564.
