UNEMPLOYED WOMEN
Work of the Executive Committee. The weekly meeting of the Women’s Unemployment Executive was held yesterday in the Council Chambers, Mrs J. K. Archer presided. In connection with a letter received from the Unemployment Board in Wellington, it was decided that Mr P. R. Climie, local representative on the board, be asked to meet the sub-com-mittee of the women’s committee with a view to discussing the matter of a further allocation of relief money for the women and the work being done by the women’s executive. Miss M. B. Lovell-Smith gave a favourable report of the work at the cookery centre. The appeal for fruit for jam had met with a generous response and already 1241 b of gooseberry jam had been made. She appealed for jam jars or bottles suitable for holding jam. Mrs A, I. Fraer gave a satisfactory report on work of the sewing centre and read a long list of articles made during the week. The knitting machine was in working order. . There were twenty-one new registrations for employment and seven had been placed in positions during the week. The committee acknowedged with thanks a donation of £1 from an anonymous donor in Oxford, also the promise of two lambs from Mr David Jones, and two dozen preserving jars from Mrs Blackaby. Arrangements had been made for special relief measures over the Christmas holidays. It was decided to write to Miss E. Batt expressing the committee’s appreciation of her services on the women’s executive.
The meeting adjourned until January 8.
