DIGBY’S SCHOOL.

Annual Presentation of Prizes. SUCCESSFUL YEAR’S WORK. The annual break-up of Digby’s Commercial School was held in the Jellicoe Hall last evening. The prizes and certificates were presented by Mr A. O. Wilkinson, president of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce, who gave a short address. To those who would be seeking office positions Mr Wilkinson gave some useful advice, emphasising the need for tidiness, reliability and courtesy. A superior type of person was inclined to the view that women should be out of offices to make way for men, he said, but he did not subscribe to that opinion. Particularly since the war women had adorned offices and he hoped they would remain there.

The report of the principal (Miss M. D. Digby) stated that the work of the school during the past year had been productive of outstanding results. The facilities afforded by the spacious and up-to-date school building in Worcester Street had been fully appreciated. One hundred and ninety-eight' Pitman and Gregg shorthand speed and theory certificates had been gained, the speed rates ranging from sixty to 150 words per minute. Of the thirty-three students who entered for the Public Service shorthand-typists’ examinations, thirty-one were successful, 100 per cent

of passes being obtained in the special, intermediate and junior examinations. Special mention should be made of the record of Winifred Sherris, an evening school pupil, who last year obtained first place on the New Zealand merit list' In the intermediate Public Service shorthand-typists’ examination, and who bad been successful this year in passing the shorthand reporters’ examination—shorthand 150 to 180 words per minute—also obtaining first place on the Ohristchurd- merit list in the special Public Ser • e shorthand-typists’ examination heid in November—shorthand 150 words per minute. A number of inquiries for qualified students bad been received during the year, resulting in 180 permanent' and temporary office positions being obtained by pupils. The vear showed still continued progress in the number of pupils in the matriculation classes, thirty-six pupils being enrolled during the year. At the end of 1 930, successes were recorded in the following examinations: —Bachelor of Arts—One candidate was presented in mathematics, and passed. Accountancy preliminary—One candidate completed the whole examination, and three candidates obtained partial passes. Sixth standard proficiency—Six candidates were presented during the year, of whom five gained proficiency and one competency. At the end of this year, ten candidates were presented for the accountanrv preliminary and maticulation examinations, and seven for the proficiency certificate. Sixteen candidates attending a special English course for the Public Service shorthand-typists examinations were presented, all passing.
