PENNY REDUCTION.
Competition Among Butter Factories. LOSS TO FARMERS. (Special to the " Star.”) DUNEDIN, December 13. Dunedin butter factories yesterday reduced the price of butter by a penny per pound to Is Id, the same price as it was this time last year. The reduction was agreed upon as an answer to competition from a Canterbury company. The drop of one penny means to Otago dairy farmers a loss of about £ISOO a month, at a time when every penny counts. It was calculated a year or two ago that the consumption of butter in New Zealand averages between half a pound and three-quarters of a pound per head per week. On those figures i* would appear that the housewife benefits by the penny a pound reduction to the extent of no more than the price of a family tram excursion or an afternoon at the theatre, whilst the cow owner is losing heavily.
