AT RICCARTON.

Riri Gallops Another Long Journey. GUSTAVO GOES WELL. Perfect weather conditions for training prevailed at Riecarton this morning, but there was not a great amount of work done. The majority of the horses who ran at Rangiora were let off easily and those Riecarton horses who have returned from Trentham were enjoying a respite. The outside trial grass was available for fast work. Riri was one Rangiora runner who did not have a holiday. He was sent a mile and a half. With Hoa as a companion for the first half mile, Riri began slowly. Meprisant replaced Hoa over the last mile. The last mile and a quarter was done in 2min 13 l-ssec and the last half mile in 51sec. The full journey occupied 2min 41sec. F. D. Jones was easy with his runners at the North Canterbury meeting. Jason’s Quest, accompanied by Dunraven, did a strong seven furlongs and Juniper, alone, had a similar task. Solvent ran half a mile tip the back without seeking time, while Shatter was allowed to take 55isec to run home half a mile. Moorbird and Autumn Bird also worked strongly. Ranelagh was sent nine furlongs, which he ran in lmin 56 2-s&ec, the last half mile in 51 2-ssec. Convoy and Minerval ran a strong six furlongs, but Great Star merely cantered a round of the sand.

Grand Review got to the end-of six furlongs in lmin 19sec, the last half mile in 53sec. Red Heckle and Waiwene dashed over half a mile up the back without being timed.

Grecian Prince and Sharp Thorn used the No. 6 grass fry special permission. They went ofr fast in a six furlong trip, running the first three furlongs in 36 2-ssec. Grecian Prince was inclined to loaf at the top of the straight, but came along again when his rider stirred him up. He won the gallop in lmin 15sec. The hurdle racers Gourmet and Gallivanter did well to cover a mile in lmin 46 4-ssec. Pansophy, who is on the improve, galloped half a mile in 51sec. Gustavo went very attractively to run six furlongs in lmin 17sec. He looks in great order. Sailor’s Love and Babel dashed over half a mile along the back in 50sec. Fast Passage was sent a mile, but she only had the pace on when Owlsflight joined in for the last half, which was clone in 50sec. Pixie Gold (light-weight) gave Tarquinius (Carmont) a start and a beating over six furlongs in lmin 18 l-ssec. Pixie Gold could have bettered the time. After Breakfast. Locksley broke away in front of Irish Chieftain from the seven-furlong post, but they were together at the end of a furlong, running home in lmin 19 l-ssec. Rational 11. was half a length in front or Eclair after doing six furlongs in lmin 17sec . Compris and Nightguard were associated over six furlongs in lmin 15 3-ssec, the last half-mile being done in 50 2-ssec. They kept close company all the way and both horses finished well. Oratorious and Lady Zephyr were on terms at the end of half a mile in 50sec. Monastic beat Water Polo over five furlongs in lmin 2 2-ssec, a smart effort. Honeycomb beat Earthquake over half a mile in 50sec. Rossferry finished in front of Countermarch in a five-furlong spin ‘in lmin 3 4-ssec. The former was going well at the end. Taku Tama and Giggles wick took 52 l-ssec for half a mile, finishing together. Wise Choice and Arrowmir covered six furlongs in lmin ISsec, the former having an advantage at the finish. Fortune’s Wheel, Lancer and Ma Belle Polly were in that order at the end of seven furlongs, run in lmin 30sec. It was a particularly good gallop on the part of the first-named pair. The Viscount covered six furlongs by himself in lmin 18 3-ssec. Tea Trader led Patrol throughout a half-mile in 51 3-ssec. Patrol did not get going well but he finished on strongly.
