FESTIVAL OF MUSIC.

Training College Classes Perform Well. The splendid work being done by Mr T. Vernon Griffiths and his associates at the Christchurch Training College Music Classes for children was amply demonstrated at the opening festival concert given last night in the Radiant Hall. The progress made by the students since the scheme was put into operation some three years ago is really wonderful. Not only was the work well done, but the programme contained some gems of the English classics, and this is especially commendable, as there is nothing better in the early stages of a child’s musical education than good music and songs. Prominent on the programme were numerous items for which Mr Griffiths had arranged the t music. The programme consisted of: Festival orchestra (in conjunction with the Boys’ High School orchestra), "Gavotte in F,” “ Minuet in G,” " March in F,” " Northern Song,” “ Song of Sunshine,” “ Happy Song,” " Intermezzo,” *“ Melody in C,” "March in D Minor.” Festival choir—“Where’er You Walk,” "Where the Bee Sucks,” “Come, Bet Us All This Day,” “ May Dew,” “ Nymphs and Shepherds cornet solo. "Scenes That Are Brgihtest,” Roy Spear; violin solo, “ Angels’ Serenade,” Douglas Zander; viloin duet, " Dorset Country Dance,” Douglas Zander and Colin Bisset; ’cello solo, “ Wiegenlied,” Miss G. Loe; trio, “ Valse Cherie,” George Madden, John Minson, T. Vernon Griffiths: trio, “Yester Dreams,” Russell Thomson, Ronald Bain, T. Vernon Griffiths. A very humorous operetta was also given, the parts being taken by Jack Sutton, Betty Metson, Laurence M’Uroy, Victor Thomas, Nora Cairney, Margery Snow and Ewart Douglas. The concert was well patronised and the young performers were heartily applauded for their work. Another concert will be given tonight, and also on Saturday afternoon.
