Woman Sentenced to Term of Imprisonment. BOROUGH AFFAIRS. (Special to the " Star.") ASHBURTON, September 28. On charges of being a rogue and a vagabond and with using obscene language, Josephine Eleanor Everett, aged fifty-one, appeared before Mr F. W. Watt, J.P., at the Ashburton Police Court this morning. Senior-Sergeant Martin explained that the accused had been before the Court about two weeks ago, and was sentenced to imprisonment on a charge of being idle and disorderly. After her release, she went to see a man in Cox Street about employment, and it was there the language complained of was used. She was addicted to drinking methylated spirits. Accused at first pleaded guilty to both charges, but afterwards admitted using only certain words in connection with the information of using obscene language. Constable T. W. Round gave evidence, and this was corroborated by a married woman who lived in Cox Street, The Bench referred to the past record of the accused, who had been convicted nine times since 1906, and she was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment with hard labour. Skating Carnival. A skating carnival in which a percentage of the takings are to be devoted to the Ashburton branch of the Plunket Society was held in the Somerset Skating Rink this evening when there was a good attendance. The results of the competitions were as follows:—Monte Carlo waltz, Miss F. Glossop and Mr M. Hunt; Lucky Spot, Miss S. Millichamp and Mr W. Preddy; Lucky Circle, Miss J. Lane and Mr R. Gudsell. Dominion Day. In recognition of Dominion Day, flags were flown on public and private buildings to-day. A full holiday was observed by the banks and the members of the legal profession. Rangiora Band Contest. The Ashburton Silver and Ashburton County Pipe Bands are practising assiduously in view of the contest at Rangiora on Labour Day. The Pipe Band will take part in both the selection, test and the quickstep. Case of Scarlet Fever. There was a break in the lengthy period of immunity from infectious diseases in the county on Sunday, when a case of scarlet fever at Allenton was admitted to the Public Hospital.
