The Primus.

A Garden Corner

If we typify the Weeping Willow with its soft colouring as heralding the spring amongst foliaged trees, we can surely give the palm in the flowering section to the Prunus, as its best known example. P. Pissardi has been beautifying our garden city for the past two or three weeks. Not content with this lavish display, its fine bronzy foliage continues through the summer to make a notable addition to the colour schemes of park and garden. There are several other varieties affording choice of colour in both flower and foliage, such as— Prunus Mume (double rose pink.) Triloba (double light pink). Bleriana (peach pink). Sinensis (white and rose forms). These are the best early bloomers. Some improved bronze and copper-leaved Prunus to note are P. Moseri with its lovely semidouble pale pink flowers; P. Nigra, very dark foliage, and Vesuvius, a variety with slightly larger leaves and good bright colour. The English sloe or blackthorn belongs to the Prunus section, of course. T.D.L.
