Archer) said to-day that the wives of several taxi-drivers working ip the city under the share system had applied to the Coal and Blanket Fund Committee for assistance, but their applications had been refused on the grounds that the funds were not intended to augment the incomes of men in permanent employment. 44 The unfortunate feature of the matter,” he added, 44 is that from the information placed before the committee it appears that the families of some of these men are in a worse position than the families of men on relief works, because of their low earnings.
