(Special to the “ Star.”) AUCKLAND, August 25. There has been unusual activity on the Stock Exchange for the early part of the week. The chief feature of the business transacted has been the definite Tax frees changed hands at £9B.* More were available at the same figure, but, in the light of a Christchurch sale yesterday at £97, there were no declarations from buyers. For taxable scrip,

si’s were lower, £9B 5s being: the higher* bid for 1933*8; £99 for 1936'5, and £99 10s for 1937'5. A parcel of 1937** were on offer at par, and Inscribed 5s lower. New Zealand Insurance changed hands at 37s 6d, but, after the sale, holders asked 38s 6d. In the bank section, there was a fair demand at recent rates, but Nationals were easier with sellers -at 755. ASHBURTON STOCK SALE. (Special to the •* Star.”) ASHBURTON. August 25. There was a limited entry and a smaller attendance than usual at the Ashburton stock sale to-day, due to steady rain. Prices for ewes showed an easing tendency compared with the Tinwald sale last ■week, but wethers were slightly better. Some good quality ewes were yarded, the best, sold on account of Mr P. Lysaght, of Fairton. realising 18s 7d. Mr O. H. Li 11, of Willowby, topped the wether market at 19s 4d. Up to midday extra prime heavyweight ewes averaged from 17s 4d to 18s 7d, and prime 15s Id to 16s lOd.
