ASHBURTON NEWS.

Prospects are Good for Lambing Season. CROPS DOING WELL. (Special to the “ Star.”) ASHBURTON, August 19. The mild spring weather following on the beneficial rain experienced during the early part of the week, has been gladly welcomed by farmers throughout the county. The past winter has been one of the driest and coldest recorded for many years, but the unusually heavy fall of snow made up to a certain extent for the lack of moisture during the first two months of the season. Stock have come through the winter well. The turnip crops, which were exceptionally good were more than ample for local requirements and in many cases farmers disposed of their surplus supplies for feeding sheep from other centres, which have been less fortunate in the matter of winter £eed. At the present time prospects for the coming season apart from the prices of wool and produce are very promising and an early spring is predicted. Early sown crops are coming away well and the condition of breeding ewes augurs well for a successful lambing season.. School Games. One Rugby team and three basketball teams from the Timaru Technical College paid a visit to Ashburton today and played matches with the Ashburton Technical School. The local team held the advantage in the first half of the football match in which play was confined chiefly to the forwards, but the second half was more evenly contested. The rear divisions in both teams lacked combination, there being only very occasional flashes of anything approaching good play. At half time the visitors led by three points to nil the game ending in a win for Timaru by 8 points to 5. Tries for the winners were secured by Gledden and Williams, the latter’s try being converted. For Ashburton, K. Palmer scored a try which E. Stigley converted. Mr J. Willoughby was referee. M’Donald and Gliddon were the most prominent of the visiting backs and Thompson shone out in the forwards. For Ashburton the outstanding players were M’Call and Croy in the rear division and G. Palmer and J. Connell in the forwards. The senior basket-ball match ended in a draw, 16 points all. Timaru won the junior A game by 14 points to 9 and Ashburton the junior B grade by 9 points to 7. The referees were Misses Spiller and Chamberlain. The visitors, who returned to Timaru by the 4 p.m. train, were accompanied by the principal of the college (Mr F. L N. Tuck), Miss H. Couper and Mr Limbrick. Men’s Hockey. The fdllowing is the draw for the men’s hockey matches to be played at the Domain on Saturday;—Ashburton v. St Andrews at 1.45 p.m.; Methven v.
