A fine tribute to the late Lady Stout is given in “ Dawn,” the official paper of Australian Women Voters. The writer says: “ Lady Stout, who died in Wellington recently, had been an invalid for some months, and her death was not unexpected. She had four sons, Dr Thomas Duncan Stout, Dr Robert Stout, Mr O. Stout, and Mr J. L. Stout, S.M., and one daughter (Mrs Trevor Holmden). Always a strong advocate of the rights of women, Lady Stout took an active part when she resided in England for a few years in supporting the movement in favour of the franchise for women, and in view of her experiences at Horne at that time j in respect to the duties of women police, she, on her return to New Zealand, strongly urged by pen and voice the appointment of women police in the Dominion. While resident in Dunedin she was one of the prime movers in the establishment of kindergarten training, and in the setting up of the Department of Domestic Science in the University. She awarded a prize to the best all-round girl at the Girls’ High School in Dunedin, and endowed the Anna P. Stout scholarship for women in economics, history, and home science at the University of Otago. Lady Stout had a charming personality, and her ladylike attributes made her greatly esteemed by all who knew her. Guild members who, at various times, have passed through Wellington and enjoyed Lady Stout’s hospitality will deeply regret the passing of this fine woman.”
