MOTORISTS CANNOT DO WITHOUT CARS.

VEHICLES ARE STILL BEING RE-LICENSED,

That people who have owned motorcars for some time find it very inconvenient to get along without them is indicated by the fact that in quite a number of cases motorists who had decided not to use their cars during the winter because of the expense have since had them re-licensed. The Chief Traffic Inspector (Mr H. Macintosh) said to-day that last evening four people rang him up at his home and inquired if it would be all right for them to drive their cars into the city with the old number plates on provided they obtained renewals of their licenses to-day. He replied in each case that such a thing could not be allowed, as there was no provision fbr allowing cars to be used without the new number plates. “ Each person who rang me up,” said Mr Macintosh, " told me that it was his intention to do without his car for a while, but he had missed it to such an extent that he had decided to get it re-licensed. It is apparent that once a person had got used to driving a car he does not like going without it, even for a limited period.” Since the beginning of this month a large number of driving licenses have been renewed and at present the total number issued for the current year is almost 8000, which is about the same as last year’s total. This morning fortyseven licenses were issued.
