OBITUARY.

JOHN N. LAWREY. The late Mr J. N. Lawrey, who passed away last week at the residence of his son at Ivirwee, was born in Cornwall in 1850. Ilis parents came out to New Zealand in 1858 and Mr Lawrey’s early days were spent in Christchurch, where he received his education. Later he was occupied with his parents on farms in the districts of Kaiapoi, Spfingston and West Meltop. He was the owner of the first portable steam threshing mill in the district. In 1885 he decided to take up storekeeping and purchased the Ivirwee store, carrying on this business till 1919, when he retired and took up residence at St Albans, the storekeeping business being carried on by his son. The late Mr Lawrey took an active part in local public affairs, being a member of tile school committee for many years and chairman for fifteen years. He was chairman of the Domain and Cemetery Boards for a lengthy period, It was owing to Mr Lawrey’s generosity in lending the major part of the money required that the bath was constructed at the school. He received a commission as a J.P. in 1908. The funeral took place in the Prom ley Cemetery. The service at the graveside was conducted by the Revs Theo Paterson and 11. L. Blamires.
