COUNCIL CASHIER TO FACE CHARGE.
ALLEGED THEFT OF £96 BELONGING TO CITY. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, June 17. Formerly cashier in the cit}' rates office, Arthur Wallace Richardson, a middle-aged man, was committed by Mr E. Page, S.M., in the Police Court to-day to, the Supreme Court for trial on a charge of theft as a servant of £96 Is 2d. the property of the City Council. It was alleged that this sum, received over the counter on April 23, had not been lodged to the credit of the district fund in the bank. Accused was allowed bail on a bond of £IOO, with a surety for a similar amount. It was stated in evidence that accused used the current day’s takings to make up the previous day’s banking total, which was made up to 3.30, the takings after that going to the next day’s totals. When the fact that money was missing was discovered accused denied any knowledge of it. At first it was believed that the money had been removed from the safe by some person who had obtained means of access. Accused said it was possible to open the safe with a penknife. The safe was kept in a strongroom which had a burglar alarm. The alarm went on Anzac night and once about Easter, but they had never found who it was that caused it to start.
