SOMERSET MAKE USEFUL SCORE.

LOWRY HANDLES ATTACK WITH GOOD JUDGMENT. (Special to Press Association.) LONDON, June <L The New Zealand cricketers commenced their match against Somerset at Bath. Lowry lost the toss and Somerset batted on an easy wicket. The weather was fine and the attendance was 4000. Somerset scored 244, and New Zealand lost two wickets for 68. Merritt, Cromb and Matheson stood down from the New Zealand team. The two latter are receiving, treatment for slight muscle strains. New Zealand was handicapped by the absence of the three leading bowlers The teams were:— New Zealand—T. C. Lowry, M. L. Page, C. F. W. Allcott, R. C. Blunt, C. S. Dempster, K. C. James, J. L. Kerr, J E. Mills, R. O. Talbot, H. G. Vivian and G L.J£eir. Somerset —A. Young, Lee, A. M’Bryan, R. A. Ingle, T. C. White, C. C. Case, J. H. Earle, A. W. Wellard, A. G. Marshall, H. D. Burrough and D. Pratten. Lowry handled the attack with excellent judgment.. A bright partnership between Lee and Ingle added 87 for the third wicket. Ingle played particularly attractive cricket. The remaining batsmen offered little opposition. Lee became over-cautious when approaching his century, and was caught at third slip. Weir bowled with admirable steadiness throughout, sending down twentyseven overs, ten of which were maidens. Blunt also kept a good length and tempted the batsmen to make mistakes. He sent down twenty-six overs, including seven maidens. New Zealand batted for eighty-five minutes before stumps were drawn. Dempster and Mills opened brightly. The former was caught at fine leg off a kicking delivery from Wellard. Mills was caught at long-off when attempting to hit White. Talbot and Blunt played out time. The New Zealand fielding showed some improvement over that of the last two matches. Scores:— SOMERSET. First Innings. A. Young, c and b Weir 17 Lee, c Lowry b Talbot 98 A.
