WEEVILS DAMAGE WHEAT IN STORE.

STEPS TAKEN TO STOP FURTHER OUTBREAKS. Serious damage has been done to a quantity of wheat which was stored at Lyttelton, through the insect known as the weevil. The grain, which was the property of the Wheat Poo), has been in store for nearly two years. All the wheat is being removed from the affected store, and is being isolated in the Harbour Board’s dock store. The building in which the trouble developed is being disinfected and treated with an insecticide. In addition to this precaution, expert assistance is being obtained in order that steps may be taken to prevent a future outbreak of the pest. The weevils have been eating into the grain, destroying its value for milling. In order to prevent spread of the insects, tar is being used at all outlets from the store which is at present affected, anri the store in which the wheat is being transferred. Strips are newly tarred every morning, and by this means it is hoped to localise the trouble.
